5 out of 9 of the U.S. Supreme Court Justices are younger than John McCain.

Put another way, 4 out of 9 are older… most notably, Justice Stevens clocking in at the ripe old age of 88 and the lovely and talented Judge Ginsburg at a mere 75.
Put yet another way, the clock is ticking on some of these geezers and we need to get a Democrat in the Oval Office so that ass-backwards and precedent-setting decisions like the one that came down today pertaining to the Second Amendment can get overturned tout de suite.
Think about it - there’s no way Stevens is on the bench for the next four years… and it’s just a matter of time before Ginsburg decides to head down to Boca for Mah Jongg and the early-bird special at H.R. McSnickitySnacks (or whatever the hell they call those god-forsaken chain restaurants down there) and then our favorite septuagenarian puts two new Justices up for nomination who - if confirmed - will no doubt bow to the NRA and get right to setting aside background checks at gun shows and waiting periods for gun ownership.
I don’t know about you but I always thought that if someone is complaining that they have to wait 48 hours to get a gun, then that’s pretty much the guy you don’t want to have a gun in the first place.
You know what? Find another f*cking hobby.

Good points all. Hope you don’t mind one small correction. Your post should read, “…lovely and talented Judge Justice Ginsburg…”

Which part of the decision today was backwards?
I do however agree with your statement about the 48 hour guy.
There really are people (me probably included) that have no business owning guns but I don’t think that means that NOBODY can have a gun…

1: really? judge justice? that’s how you refer to them???

2: in a nutshell, i think any supreme court decision that makes guns easier to come (and, in turn, easier to get into the hands of people who want to use guns for nefarious purposes) by is wrong… and the only reason more people (ie, politicians) don’t come out and say so is that there are several million voters in this country who happen to like playing with guns.

don’t be so sure. justice stevens still flies his plane and putes on the beach.

how bout we move away from people that are younger than McCain??
Comment by Rachael — June 26, 2008 @ 10:48 pm
I’m all in favor of anything that makes it harder for crooks to get guns, Background checks, waiting periods, etc. It makes sense. I mean after all who needs a gun right the heck now? Unless you have this crazy psycho stalker and you fear for your life.
But this decision isn’t backwards. It doesn’t make it easier for whackjobs to get a gun, it just makes it legal for normal people to own a gun and THAT is a good thing.
Oh, and Rachael your comment makes no sense. This blog is called things that are younger than McCain. If we stopped talking about people younger than John McCain, that would be kind of stupid, wouldn’t it?
Comment by Ron — June 27, 2008 @ 9:11 am
You just lost a lot of respect from me with this one. Gun ownership rights were important enough for our founding fathers to include in our Bill of Rights.
For the record, I do not own a gun. I do not mind a waiting period if I go to purchase a gun (even though I fail to see how said waiting period protects anyone). I *do* mind someone saying that I can’t own one, because our Bill of Rights says I can.

8: thanks for writing. sorry to have gone down a notch or two (or ten) in your book but that’s the way i feel.
i don’t want to get into a debate here about different interpretations of the framers’ intentions - it’s not the time, place, or spirit of this blog - but, much like the following clip from the west wing, i think we need to adapt to changing times and new problems:

Sorry, the strikethrough tags I put around Judge did not show up. I was trying to indicate that Justice should replace Judge.

I’m a lot less worried about citizens getting guns. Fun to argue about, but giving Americans too many rights doesn’t really keep me up at night (although the gun fights outside my apartment in downtown Seattle sometimes did). I’m lot more worried about Exxon getting off scott-free. I feel much more threatened by Exxon, Big Pharma, the Religious WRONG, the Military Industrial complex and Dick fucking Cheney than by the kids running around with guns in their pants. The baggy-pants gunslingers on the block won’t drag us into world war fucking three - so I choose my battles.

If you want to say McCain is too old to be president, so be it, but at least be consistent. The older judges are the ones who are protecting our civil liberties and against shoot outs in the streets. So before you knock McCain for age, think about how much better the older judges are. The best reason not to vote for McCain is because of his ideas, his smug attitude, and the military values that form his world view. Does anyone else find it amazing that the son and grandson of naval admirals, born to entitlement and power, accuses an African-American who made it on his own of elitism?

Sorry, gotta disagree with you on the 2nd Amendment ruling. Yes, people are killed with weapons. That doesn’t change the fact that our constitution guarantees our right to them. People are also killed by free speech (and if you don’t believe it you haven’t thought about it hard enough). If people don’t like it then they should find enough others who agree with them to amend the constitution, not pretend that it doesn’t say something that it does.
Also, background checks are required at all gun shows on firearms purchased from FFL licensed dealers. The only non-background-check purchases are those that are private transactions between private individuals. They are no different than if you and I were neighbors and I agreed to sell you a shotgun I didn’t want anymore. In that case no background check required, with the only restriction being that if I am aware of any reason you cannot legally own a gun then I am not able to sell to you.

5 out of 9 Justices? Hello??
That’s enough to form a serious majority youth voting bloc.

This is the worst comparison ever. “55% of the supreme court is older than John McCain”. If it were 8, I might be impressed. What a fucking joke of a site.
Comment by John McCain — July 3, 2008 @ 7:56 pm
so charming…
i think it’s perfectly reasonable to point out the age of several of the justices in order to highlight the likelihood that some will get replaced under a mccain presidency.
thanks.

Fun site until I ran into this unrelated anti-gun rant. Terrorists have habeus corpus rights, but Americans don’t have 2A rights? I’m ashamed that this is even a partisan question.
I understand that you don’t like the backlash you’re getting for your anti-freedom post, but hey, you posted it.

I agree with you, and support the 2 day waiting period, and even think it should be extended to seven, because for me, weapons are a recreational item (and will soon be a professional item when I sign up).
However I disagree that guns as a hobby kills people, and it is really only when they are misused (or used properly depending on your interpretation of their history) that they are a danger to people.
