Mildred Loving is younger than John McCain.

Born in 1939, Mildred Loving (who, along with her husband, won a landmark case in defense of their interracial marriage that paved the way to the elimination of laws against mixed marriage across the country) died this week at the age of 68.
On a related subject, John McCain takes the half-assed position that the issue of gay marraige should be left to individual states.

That it should be left up to the states isn’t really a half-assed position. Marriage laws typically are left up to the states–that’s why you go to the county courthouse, not the federal courthouse, to get a marriage license. The issue with McCain, and many Republicans, is whether the federal government should step in to amend the U.S. Constitution and prohibit those states that want to have gay marriage from having it. In the past, McCain has basically staked out the position that is as liberal as you can get in the Republican party, saying the government shouldn’t do this. But he’s also said he’s against gay marriage, which, unless he’s actually in favor of such an amendment, really means the only thing he can do is vote against it as a citizen in Arizona.

To me, it seems like he’s punting it back to the States so as not to have to take a firm stand and risk alienating anyone - his base or more liberal-minded people.

To be fair, doesn’t Obama have pretty much the same position? Although McCain has shifted (or stayed) to the right on a lot of issues for this campaign, gay marriage, at least for now, hasn’t been one of them.

better to win the states over one a time and make the rest cave than have to win the entire nation in one fell swoop.

Susan… I am ASMAMED that a person such as yourself who seems so well versed (note the sarcasm)would subscribe to the complete idiocy that is innate in all forms of nationalism… i have yet to hear one reasonable argument as to why America is the “greatest” country in the world… and though as a country it once had reason to be proud the ideals upon which it was founded were abandoned long ago…
