Things younger than Republican Presidential candidate (oh, and did I forget to mention war hero?) John McCain

Am I being “age-ist”? Maybe. But maybe not. The world is a pretty complicated place right now and I’m thinking that it’s not such a great time to elect our oldest President ever. So sue me.

Nylon.

Nylon is younger than John McCain.

I don’t know why but Nylon was probably the single most popular suggestion that I received since this site went live on Monday (and I received a ton - so thanks to all who sent them in. Keep ‘em coming!).
Nylon was first used commercially in a nylon-bristled toothbrush in 1938 - which makes me wonder what Ma and Pa McCain were using until then to brush little Johnny’s first teeth. It then grew in popularity as something that soldiers could give their wives to keep them off the trail of their girlfriends (and vice versa).
One final bit of nylon trivia? The first three letters of the word are completely arbitrary.

  1. How about acrylic paint and permanent press pants?
Now we know watching McCain in action is about as interesting as watching paint dry, but come to find out he’s older than it too!
I wonder if he wears Sansabelt pants? (which he is also older than, and those things are really outdated!)
    :)

  3. Horse hair toothbrushes are popular amongst the hippie/health food store crowd today. I imagine people used them “back in the day”. People in Pakistan I met there use sticks with frayed ends.

  6. The only problem with the blog is that it makes me realize, despite his actual age, McCain is incredibly youthful and energetic. Sorry….not a McCain supporter

  7. From wiki:

    Etymology

In 1940 John W. Eckelberry of DuPont stated that the letters “nyl” were arbitrary and the “on” was copied from the suffixes of other fibers such as cotton and rayon. A later publication by DuPont (Context, vol. 7, no. 2, 1978) explained that the name was originally intended to be “No-Run” (”run” meaning “unravel”), but was modified to avoid making such an unjustified claim and to make the word sound better. The story goes that Carothers changed one letter at a time until DuPont’s management was satisfied. But he was not involved in the nylon project during the last year of his life, and committed suicide before the name was coined.

Two theories about the origin of the name claim that it is an acronym of “Now you’ve lost, Old Nippon” (N.Y.L.O.N.), or that it stands for “New York-London”. In the latter case, it is claimed that these were the two cities where the product was researched and developed, or that the inspiration came from a New York to London airplane ticket. There is no evidence for the ‘airline ticket’ theory, though some compelling evidence of the former from contemporary researchers at Oxford University who assisted in development…Oxford can be viewed as London from New York, but Nylox would have been more accurate.

  10. Nice pins that lady has. The umbrella (bottom right) Batman would like in black. And hey! Little John McCain was so brave he was able to brush his own darn teeth - thank ye very much!

  14. Before Nylon was used for toothbrushes, they were made from boar bristle, at least in the US. That design was patented in 1857, but not mass produced until 1885, after it was out of patent. The patent probably shouldn’t have been granted anyway, since it sounds a whole like a design invented in England in 1780.
