Things younger than Republican Presidential candidate (oh, and did I forget to mention war hero?) John McCain

Am I being “age-ist”? Maybe. But maybe not. The world is a pretty complicated place right now and I’m thinking that it’s not such a great time to elect our oldest President ever. So sue me.

The pull-tab on cans.

The pull-tab on cans is younger than John McCain.

The ad above looks to the near future - to a time when getting the “real gusto” of Schlitz would be much, much easier…. thanks to the softer top that allows the opener to cut through the metal like a warm knife through butter.

Imagine the excitement that would follow years later when Mikolaj Kondakow of Thunder Bay, Ontario would invent the pull-tab.. eliminating the need for the separate opener altogether.

No, really. Just try to imagine. And think of the gusto possibilities.

(Thanks to Tami for the tip!)

Billie Jean King

Billie Jean King is younger than John McCain.

She’s like Jackie Robinson. Only she’s a woman. And she’s white. And gay. And a tennis player. Otherwise, put them in a room together and you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference.

The indoor shopping mall.

The indoor shopping mall is younger than John McCain.

Depending on who you ask (many cities seek to lay claim to the coveted title of “pioneer in bludgeoning the landscape), the first indoor shopping mall either was or was not the Southdale Center near Minneapolis.

The Marital Rating Scale.

The Marital Rating Scale is younger than John McCain.

If this is legit (and my spidey sense tells me that it’s a big “if”), it shows the attitude towards women that was prevalent when McCain was born - so I guess it should come as no great surprise that he allegedly cheated on his first wife and has had some choice words for his second.

Click here for the uncropped and larger view.

So annoying.

The amount of “comment spam” the blog is getting has soared of late - so I installed a new Wordpress plug-in that’s supposed to eradicate the problem (although that in and of itself sounds like a claim a spammer would make).

If you have any problems posting comments or your comments don’t show up, please let me know by sending an email to tips(at)thingsyoungerthanmccain(dot)com.

Thanks.

George Takei.

George Takei is younger than John McCain.

Blah, blah, blah, Star Trek, blah, blah, blah, Kirk wore a hairpiece, blah, Rocket Man, blah, blah, black chick, blah, blah, something, something, and prosper - OK, here’s the real point of this post:

Anyone who thinks there ought to be a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage is batshit insane.

I just got finished watching the two-hour panderfest at that megachurch (btw - “megachurch”? wtf?) in California and the crowd was clearly in favor of anything that might stop my next door neighbor and his boyfriend from getting married.

Don’t let the right fool you, “my friends” (to quote John McOld) - this issue isn’t about the “definition” of marriage or some wacky notion of a slippery slope leading all the way down to people marrying Dobermans. It’s about tolerance, it’s about the separation of church and state, and it’s about making a decision about whether we want legislation that says - in the 21st century - that some Americans are less equal than others.

This ad.

This ad is younger than John McCain.

Thought it would be fun to start a section on the blog for ads that are younger… just to help paint a picture of a time and place.

I’ll be posting more in the days to come but feel free to send any you come across to tips(at)thingsyoungerthanmccain(dot)com.

Unfit for publication.

Jerome Corsi, who helped launch the Swift Boat smear campaign against John Kerry, is at it again with a book of distortions and downright lies about Barack Obama. Not content to roll over and play dead, the Obama campaign has released a 41-page pdf that addresses every false claim in the book - from the inconsequential to the substantive.

Download it here - and get involved here.

Jackson Browne.

Jackson Browne is younger than John McCain.

My friend Rob and I saw Jackson Browne at Madison Square Garden back in the 80’s and it was - hands down - the dullest concert either of us had ever seen. It was shortly after the “No Nukes” concerts and Bruce Springsteen was known to make guest appearances at Jackson Browne concerts (to, I assume, wake the crowd) so we went. From about the third song on, we were yelling “BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCE” just about as loud as we could… much to the dismay of the aging, patchouli-soaked stoners sitting all around us. Needless to say, Bruce was a no-show and - although I can’t say for sure - I’m guessing that we headed back downtown to watch Robin Byrd on Channel J. (NB: Robin Byrd only looks older than John McCain. Sadly, she’s younger - by a lot - and insists on still taking her clothes off.)

Speaking of Jackson Browne, it seems that he’s suing the McCain campaign for unlicensed use of the song “Running On Empty”. In addition to not having permission to use the song, Browne - a staunch liberal activist - believes that the song misrepresents his political beliefs and creates the false impression that he’s endorsing McCain.

He also calls bullshit on McCain for using a song that says “In ‘65, I was 17″ when we all know that he was like 40.

Damn liberal media is at it again.

It drives me crazy how they insist on reporting the news. I mean, just because something actually happened, it doesn’t mean that they need to bring it up. Why can’t they leave well enough alone? Why can’t they just be more like Fox and simply read. the. damn. press. releases? Dana Perino doesn’t write those things for her health, people.

McCain adviser got money from Georgia.

THE ROOSEVELT DIME.

The Roosevelt dime is younger than John McCain.

Did you know that Roosevelt was picked to be on the dime in 1946 because of his work with the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (later known as the March of DIMES)… and that his work included being part of the campaign that urged people to send in DIMES as donations?

Oh. You did? So I guess it’s just me that was asleep in eighth grade history class.

OK but did you know that Indiana Representative Mark Souder introduced legislation in 2003 to have Roosevelt’s image removed from the dime and have Reagan’s image get used instead? This, by the way, is the same Mark Souder who is known as an “armageddonist,” as he views the United States’s role in the world is to start the Apocalypse by invading Iran.

Ha! So who’s the smart one now??? Or, at least, who’s the one who knows how to use Google?

(Thanks to Karen for the tip!)
