Satellite Photography is younger than John McCain.

The first satellite photographs of Earth were made on August 14th, 1959. Had it not been for this landmark discovery, John McCain’s statement on June 17th of this year that offshore drilling is “safe enough these days that not even Hurricanes Katrina and Rita could cause significant spillage” would’ve been accepted as fact by people other than George Will, The Wall Street Journal, and Fox News.
The reality is that the spillage was so significant that it was visible from space and its environmental damage was on par with that of the Exxon Valdez accident.
Oops.
(Thanks to Preston for the tip!)

Ick. Satellite photography is even younger than me. I hate that.

Uhh, when I read the story, it said that the oil leaked from local refineries, not the offshore rigs. Also, if you look at the satellite pics, the source of the oil is clearly the coast, not the drilling rigs, which are some 75 miles away from the coast.
