Things younger than Republican Presidential candidate (oh, and did I forget to mention war hero?) John McCain

Am I being “age-ist”? Maybe. But maybe not. The world is a pretty complicated place right now and I’m thinking that it’s not such a great time to elect our oldest President ever. So sue me.

Scrabble.

Scrabble is younger than John McCain.

How fortuitous. What might very well be the world’s most boring game is actually younger than might very well be the countries most boring Senator (although there certainly are some quality contenders in that field).
By the way, I tried to rearrange these letters in Photoshop to spell out “He is really old” but it looked like crap. If anyone wants to take a stab at it, send it my way and I’ll give you credit.
(Thanks to Paul, Lisa, Laura, and Stephen)
UPDATE: EpicWes did a great job re-working the image… thanks very much! It’s just right!

  1. This is a fabulous list!

Here’s two more I can think of:

The ballpoint pen is younger than John McCain. It was invented in 1938 by Ladislo Biro.

Tupperware is younger than john McCain. Earl Silas Tupper patented the Tupperware seal in 1947.

  7. you are wrong about one thing- Scrabble is not boring.

In fact, except for chess, it may be the most cerebral and stimulating game there is.

  13. Hi guys,

I’m from Europe, and as everyone in the world, I feel pretty concerned about presidential elections in countries like the US, Russia etc.
Traditionnally, it has always been better for US-Europe relations when a democrat was leading US. But since the Western civilizations has to face such troubles, especially with islam dominated countries, I’m not sure wether it would be appropriated to elect a democrat such as Obama, who would just take his pants off in front of islamists leaders, turn around and say, “go on, I’m used to, I’m a democrat”. Anyway, Brussels, the European capital has 40% of its population which is muslim, France, has 10 million muslims over 65 million inhabitants. Everyday, we hear about islamists terrorists who have been arrested around Europe, preparing bombings and attacks. While american liberal medias are talking about the gasoline prices. A republican would be better to manage such a civilization conflict and fight against those who want our wives wearing Burka. I suggest you read Samuel Huntington, that would be a good start. Then you can decide before you vote, knowing what’s happening around the world.
War in Iraq was inevitable, the way Bush Jr. did it was not the right one, it is his main mistake. Europe would have followed US into this war if it would have been for good reasons. We are part of this Western civilization, built with jewish and christian roots, and we have achieved the best thing in the world: Democracy.
A republican can protect such ideas, a democrat will play with compromises and we will be fucked… It’s like opposing reason and feelings.
McCain is not too old, 72 is ok to run a country, he is not working for a design company or and advertisement one which has to stick to the trend. He pretends to be the next American president, it’s not because Scrabble is younger than him that he is not qualified to lead your country and represent the western civilization.
In Europe, the medias, which are liberals, so they are socialists, are supporting Obama, they have talked about McCain once or twice in a year…but they are also defending terrorists, pretending it’s our fault if they act like that.
So, please, stop reading NYtimes and think about the global implications of the american election. The age of a president is not the main issue. McCain has balls, that’s the only thing which counts.
Electing Obama, you will precipitate the end of the western civilization. Think about 9/11, everyone in Europe has cried seing this, but some muslims community leaders and members where celebrating, yelling “we fucked them”, as in many arab countries, people were celebrating the death of infidels. You have western allied, don’t loose their support. America is currently right wing with a republican, Europe goes right wing too, Merkel in Germany, Berlusconi in Italy, Sarkozy in France etc. Obama would go left, so against the current western trend.
I’m not against democrats, I just think that they are better leaders when time is more peaceful.

  16. I have never commented on any of these issues on the internet. BUT,, you leave me no alternative. First of all !!! You do not like scrabble and think it is booorring, because you can not spell. No matter what you can not spell photo shop with the letter you have given, let alone spell anything else ! ! ! As for McCain being too old, you are nuts. Do you count on being a raving idiot when you are 71 or do you think you might be able to count your change when you get a pack of gum. McCain is a wonderful, intelligent and experienced man for this office. As for Hilary. I guess it was a last challenge for her. I won’t even go there. Obama ??????? You would really put an Arab in the Oval Office ???? You are absolutely out of your mind. You obviously do not know ANYTHING about this man, besides that he is “young” and wants to be president. I for one am praying like crazy that that Predjudice man never sees the inside of the White House ! ! ! We are in for some serious problems if he does. And I do not care how many things are older than McCain. You say you are 40, I think we could have some fun naming things that you are older than. LIKE —- computers !, and all the electric games that are alive and well today. There are just too many to list. Guess YOU are too old to be President. Have a swell day and a swell life and I hope your vote in the election does not count.

    Comment by Bonijo — May 30, 2008 @ 10:48 pm

  17. Bonijo-

First of all, I haven’t seen any misspelled words in the admin’s posts. It looks like you might be saying that Photoshop is supposed to be two words, but it is, in fact, one word. See http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/index.html if you don’t believe me. I’m not entirely sure that’s what you are getting at, though, because of all the grammar and punctuation problems in your post. Please learn to write properly before you criticize other people’s writing.

Second, while I certainly hope I will still be able to “count my change when I get my gum” when I am 71, the president needs to be able to do much more than that. He needs to have a good enough memory to remember which person is the leader of which country, and what is going on in each country. He needs to have the mental agility to deal with a crisis quickly and without making mistakes that may cost lives. He needs to have a relatively cool temper, unless we want him to start unnecessary wars. He needs to have the stamina to make it through at least 4 years of the hardest job in the world without having a nervous breakdown. And, finally, he needs to have a better-than-even chance of surviving at least 4 years. I’m not at all confident that McCain meets any of those requirements.

Third, Barack Obama is not an Arab. His father, who did not raise him, was Kenyan. His mother was American. He lived in Indonesia with his mother and stepfather for four years, between the ages of 6 and 10. After that, he was raised by his maternal grandparents in America. As you see, neither of his parents is from the Middle East, nor was he raised there. The “theory” that he is Muslim has also been debunked. No matter what you may think about his church, it is a Christian church, not a Muslim mosque.

Finally, just so you know, computers are more than 40 years old. According to Wikipedia, “The first devices that resemble modern computers date to the mid-20th century (around 1940 - 1945), although the computer concept and various machines similar to computers existed earlier.” That makes computers at least 63 years old. In other words, McCain is the only candidate they are younger than.
