The computer is younger than John McCain.
This was probably the single most popular suggestion I’ve received since I started the blog. I never used it because the computer is a seemingly modern invention and there was nothing terribly shocking to me about it being younger than McCain. (Although, to be fair, I did learn that it’s not nearly as recent an invention as I had assumed.)
What IS shocking is that we’re on the verge of electing a President that not only freely admits he doesn’t know how to use one but who almost relishes in his luddite-ness. (Remind you of anyone?)
Now, don’t get me wrong. I don’t want my President to actually be using a computer. I’d like to think that he has more important things to do than check email and look at Vietnamese porn. I would, however, like him to have a passing familiarity with the technology that affects the lives of, I don’t know, everyone!
I’m sorry - call me ageist if you must but if this isn’t proof-positive that he’s out of touch, I don’t know what is.

Maybe it’s just me….but does the big McC have a problem with things that are much younger than him? E.g. Viagra, computers, Czech Republic amongst others.
I guess someone who is basing his credentials to be President on being a war hero (and salute him for that!) 40 years ago has a hard time with the modern world.

thanks for your comment, nigel - and thanks for raising the subject of mccain’s service because it’s something that i’ve been meaning to post about. i have no issue with mccain and his military record. in fact, i kinda admire people who have that level of dedication to anything (whether the military, clergy, professional gambling, whatever).
the only reason that i included “(oh, and did i forget to mention war hero?)” in the title of the blog is because i find it irritating that he can’t put a sentence together without reminding people of his status. it’s insulting to peoples’ intelligence for him to assume that it’s the only thing that matters to them (or that it’s even high on their list) and, to his detriment, it reminds voters that perhaps he knows that this record is really the only thing he’s got going for him.

Many years ago (40) we had a vice-presidential candidate get into major trouble by describing someone as a “Fat Jap.”
It is a commentary on the decline of civility in this country that now a presidential candidate can use the term “gook” and no one notices.
I want my country back.

Yep, I find his computer illiteracy scary in this day and age. Scarier still are all the possible reasons for why he is computer illiterate.

We can only hope that he will connect to read his email soon. With his level of net savvy, he’ll probably blow all of his campaign funds to some Nigerian…

From what I understand, the GPA is younger than McCain — he cannot tell what his GPA would’ve been in college…

Technology comes and goes, sometimes in one (long) lifetime. I was thinking about when I first started working, and the Telex machine was ubiquitous in offices with international communications. My first company (in 1979) had offices in Europe, and the telexes were constantly flying back and forth.
Telex was developed in the 30’s and the first international telex links were in the 40’s. Telex’ would send appropriate analogue signals for landlines to dial and connect, and then translate data using the baudot code (developed long before ASCII) at about 45 baud.
I wonder how many of your readers have even heard of a Telex? I bet John McCain knows what they are.
