The Margarita is younger than John McCain.

Matt G. from the UK just wrote in with this great suggestion off of my earlier treatise on the Nacho - thanks Matt!
The origin of the Margarita is a subject of heated debate (well, at least among the five or six people who lay claim to its invention) but my favorite has to be that it was created by Enrique Bastate Gutierrez in the early 1940’s as an homage to Rita Hayworth, whose real name was Margarita Cansino (”Cansino” being Spanish for “drink until you can’t feel anything from the waist down”).

Um… is the Margarita Man not wearing pants? Yikes!

I know - and it’s a little creepy that he’s also advertising that he does things for kids’ parties!
Scratch that - it’s a lot creepy.

According to cocktail historian Gary Regan, the Marg is in the class of drinks called “New Orleans Sours,” which are separated by regular sours by the addition of triple sec. Other N.O. Sours include the Sidecar (Brandy), the Cosmopolitan (Vodka) and the Classic Cocktail (Whiskey).
As you say, there are several accounts of it’s creation - Regan lists five - giving various dates as 1936, the 1950’s (in LA of all places), ca. 1930, and 1948.
Incidentally, the story you cite sounds like a telephone version of one that appears in Regan’s book “The Joy of Mixology.” In his version, one Carlos Herrera in ‘48 at the Rancho La Gloria hotel near Tijuana named the drink for starlet Marjorie King, who went by Margarita while in Mexico.
Probably the basic idea of the drink was concocted B.M. simply by substituting Tequila for the Brandy in a Sidecar, but the addition of salt and the name probably came later.

“Cocktail Historian”?
I wonder if that’s a fancy word for “alcoholic”…
Thanks for posting!

I can’t decide who’s creepier looking: Don Imus or The Margarita Man. John McCain is less creepy-looking than both of them; at least he’s got that going for him.
