Things younger than Republican Presidential candidate (oh, and did I forget to mention war hero?) John McCain

Am I being “age-ist”? Maybe. But maybe not. The world is a pretty complicated place right now and I’m thinking that it’s not such a great time to elect our oldest President ever. So sue me.

This ad.

This ad is younger than John McCain.

Thought it would be fun to start a section on the blog for ads that are younger… just to help paint a picture of a time and place.

I’ll be posting more in the days to come but feel free to send any you come across to tips(at)thingsyoungerthanmccain(dot)com.

  2. Production years from Wikipedia:
    Edsel: 1958-1960
    AMC Pacer: 1975-1980
    Pinto: 1971-1980
    Gremlin: 1970-1978
    Beetle: 1938-2003

    Barack Obama: 1961-

So careful: yes, McCain is older than most of these, but so is Obama!

  3. The ad itself is interesting. I’m not sure, but I suspect that cigarettes were already seen as being unhealthy: if that was the case, then an ad about doctors smoking implies “Look, it can’t be unhealthy because doctors do it!” The way the ad is worded, we have no way of knowing if doctors typically smoked or not: the ad copy would be correct even if 95% of doctors didn’t smoke at all, so long as the plurality of that remaining 5% smoked Camels.

According to Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoking#The_social_stigma ), the first breakthrough study showing the harmful effects of smoking was in 1948; just how old is this ad?

  5. I agree with #4. A lot of doctors smoked. In the general population at that time, over 50% of adults smoked. Now, fewer than 20% of adults smoke. It is difficult for people who don’t remember when the Surgeon General warnings became common (circa 1970), to understand just how pervasive smoking used to be.

My dad is a retired doctor, age 70, who has smoked since age 15, despite childhood asthma. He was diagnosed with emphysema over 10 years ago but only stopped smoking year before last. His one conciliation to his condition was to switch from Marlboros (aka “Cowboy Killers”) to Marlboro Lites. He did quit cold turkey after 3 days in the ICU with a case of bronchitis that turned into pneumonia. Funny how not being able to breathe and almost dying can change a life-long habit. He does have less than 60% lung capacity but maybe bought himself a few years by quitting, if his diabetes or high blood pressure don’t get him first.

So ads like this piss me off. And I’m glad that they killed Joe Camel too./endrant.
